Position open to Afognak ShareholdersGeneral Description:

The position of Payroll Technician Apprentice reports to the Payroll Manager. The Apprentice Technician will perform record keeping and payroll processing activities for payrolls with less than 50 employees. This will include timesheet review, verification of tax calculations, leave accruals, and processing payments. Technicians operate all departmental equipment and use Microsoft products like Word, Excel, and Outlook. There will be filing, scanning, and upkeep of payroll binders.


  • Under general supervision, perform work involving the processing of Alutiiq payrolls.

  • Position will process the same semi-monthly payrolls. (no more than six cycles and all under 50 employees)

  • Technicians perform payroll calculations.

  • Compiles, analyzes, calculates, balances and audits from all relevant information and forms.

  • Coordinates and reviews employee hours/days on timesheets and researches and resolves discrepancies.

  • Scan documents and place in appropriate electronic folders.

  • Upon completion of payrolls, burn disks and put payroll binders away.

  • Maintain and request documents from Archive Management.

  • File

  • Backup AQTime with password resets only.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills


  • One year of office type experience, payroll a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills needed as this position communicates via phone and e-mail with sites, employees and managers.

  • Candidate must be able to comprehend and perform payroll work with accuracy and a strong sense of urgency.

  • Must be able to operate office machines, including a computer, copier, fax and 10-key by touch and make arithmetic calculations.

  • Communicate effectively in English; follow as well as understand oral and written directions.

  • Candidate must communicate with employees tactfully and courteously answer questions in person, electronically and by telephone.

  • Maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suites, particularly Excel and Outlook is required.

  • Excellent attention to detail required.
