Calista Corporation Intern-Lands in Anchorage, Alaska

JOB SUMMARY This position participates in Calista’s 10-week Summer Internship Program from May 24, 2018-August 3, 2018.

The Lands Intern provides technical assistance and support related to lands records, scanning, filing, field work support, and GIS tasks related to the development and maintenance of the Calista GIS Lands Department. The Land Department Intern will support the GIS Specialist, Land Planner, and Geologist/field supervisors for various projects.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Office Support

  • Assist in promoting and evaluating mineral exploration and development of Calista’s mineral resources, reporting to Calista’s Geologist and VP of Land and Natural Resources.

  • Assist in file management and electronic back up of historical, geological, village historical files, and materials sites information in a variety of technical mediums.

  • Assist in updating pit perimeters, materials inventory updates with the Land Planner.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Support

  • Work on GIS projects for Mineral Resources, land status, materials sites as assigned.

  • Create new GIS datasets based upon existing standards, edit existing Shapefiles, CAD files, Geodatabases, and relational databases.

  • Acquire, download, correct, integrate, & document GPS data from the field to existing GIS datasets, data entry into a GIS related database.

  • Scanning plats or georeferencing other materials.

Field Work

  • Attend a firearms training course.

  • Field work may be required, under direct supervision to Calista remote sites.

  • Assist in logistics planning, coordination, and camp preparation.

  • Support Calista Geologist in technical field work.


  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


  • Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Considerable knowledge of personal computer use, including word processing and spreadsheet programs.

  • Considerable knowledge of computer file directories, pathways, and relational databases.

  • Knowledge of ArcGIS & basic GPS techniques are preferred.

  • Ability to produce quality materials within tight timeframes.

  • Ability to participate in group meetings.

  • Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule.

  • Ability to travel to remote locations for work related purposes.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Currently enrolled in a college or vocational degree program and preference in attending classes on a full-time basis.

  • Currently enrolled in a Cartography, GIS, Geomatics, Geology, Resource and Land Management, and Environmental Law, degree program or courses preferred.

  • Must possess a GPA of at least 2.0 and be in good academic standing.

  • Ability to pass a physical test.

  • Valid current Alaska Driver’s License with good driving record preferred.

  • Ability to pass a background and drug screening.

  • Ability to speak Yup’ik preferred.

Calista Corporation has a fast-paced, multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. At times, work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites. Field employees will be required to travel by plane to remote conditions and live in tight quarters with other employees currently assigned to the same job, and with whom he/she has already worked alongside all day. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes.
